MGB Mass Eye and Ear Emergency Department
The Mass Eye and Ear Emergency Department (MEE ED), in conjunction with the Department of Emergency Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, is conducting a search for the Medical Director of Emergency Medicine at the MEE ED. The MEE Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will work closely with the MEE Director of Ophthalmology Emergency Services, MEE Director of Otolaryngology Emergency Services, and MEE ED nursing and administrative leaders to advance the MEE ED’s clinical goals and mission.
The MEE Medical Director of Emergency Medicine is a new and innovative leadership position in the emergency department of a Harvard-affiliated, nationally recognized specialty hospital. The Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will collaborate with the current MEE ED leadership to successfully create and integrate emergency medicine into the MEE ED. This person will lead the team responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining an elite group of emergency physicians to provide emergency physician coverage to the MEE ED 24 hours per day. In addition to creating an emergency medicine program within the MEE ED, the Medical Director of Emergency Medicine is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the emergency medicine team at the MEE ED. This includes collaboration with the MEE ED Directors of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology in planning and implementing an ED care delivery model to achieve high quality care for our patients with continuous improvement to match the needs of our patients, the hospital, and the community.
Successful candidates will have shown excellence in leadership and a track record of success in innovation in emergency medicine operations. The ability to create and maintain collaborative working relationships, communicate effectively, and implement change is critical to the role.
The specific duties of the MEE Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will evolve based on the needs of the department and the hospital and include the following key responsibilities:
- Recruit and hire emergency physicians to work in the MEE ED.
- Collaborate with physician, nursing, administrative, APP, and resident operations leadership to promote and evolve a model of care to ensure high-quality care, patient experience, and efficient patient flow.
- Collaborate with the MEE ED Director of Ophthalmology Emergency Services and the MEE ED Director of Otolaryngology Emergency Services to create processes and workflows that integrate the three services to provide streamlined, effective care of the patients in the MEE ED.
- Produce an attending clinical schedule for MEE ED Emergency Physicians and maintain an up-to-date scheduling policy.
- Ensure 24-7 emergency physician coverage of the MEE ED.
- Oversee clinical onboarding and orientation of new MEE ED EM faculty.
- Coordinate with hospital and system quality leaders to develop and enact departmental guidelines and procedures to enhance patient quality and safety.
- Coordinate departmental initiatives to ensure EPIC EHR supports clinical workflows.
- Collaborate with MEE clinical leadership to synchronize clinical initiatives when appropriate.
- Liaise with radiology, laboratory, and ancillary services to ensure optimal care for MEE ED patients.
- Ensure MEE ED Emergency Physicians know and comply with departmental and hospital guidelines and policies.
- Maintain and support the clinical teaching environment for all trainees.
- Maintain a repository of MEE ED Emergency Physicians clinical guidelines and policies.
This role offers protected time in accordance with department policy for the duration of the role. The MEE Medical Director of Emergency Medicine will work 0.50 clinical FTE in the MEE ED and administrative protected time is currently equivalent to 0.5 clinical FTE. The academic
appointment will be at Harvard Medical School at the instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor level.
