Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation
The Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S) is seeking a highly qualified leader to take on the role of the Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation to lead and grow our mission to improve emergency care through simulation training and discovery.
CUIMC is a preeminent quaternary care institution in Northern Manhattan. Comprised of adult and pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians, advanced practice providers, and multiple world-class training programs, our Department provides education across the spectrum of medical learners including medical students from the VP&S, pediatric and emergency medicine residents, multiple off service rotating residents, and fellows. There is a strong emphasis on multi-disciplinary & interprofessional team training that includes nursing, physician assistants, child-life specialists, and other sub-specialty involvement during regular in-situ simulation exercises. Our simulation program closely aligns with quality and safety efforts including integration with the hospital error reporting system structure.
The Director of Emergency Medicine Simulation will report to the Vice Chair of Innovation and work with the leadership team to oversee a simulation program that aligns with the departmental mission and strategic goals for technology-enhanced education, quality & safety, academic scholarship, and clinical improvement. Eligible candidates will be board-certified in EM or PEM, or hold a PhD in Human Factors or other field related to technology-enhanced education. Ideal candidates will provide and carry out a vision to foster a culture of improvement and build a collaborative community that uses simulation science to tackle meaningful challenges in healthcare.
Resources include a close relationship with state of the art simulation facilities (Mary & Michael Jaharis Simulation Center at VP&S and the Helene Fuld Health Trust Simulation Center at the Columbia University School of Nursing). These brand new facilities grant access to cutting edge technologies including high-fidelity medical, surgical, and virtual reality simulators, 3D printing, standardized patients, and professional video recording equipment.
The faculty group at Columbia staffs four EDs in the New York metropolitan area with approximately 250,000 combined annual visits: NYP-CUIMC ED with a recently completed $100 million state-of-the-art ED renovation; NYP-Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital ED with an ACS accredited Level I Pediatric Trauma Center; NYP-Allen Hospital ED in northern Manhattan, and NYP-Lawrence Hospital ED in the Westchester village of Bronxville, NY. Our academic EM and pediatric EM faculty supervise residents from our highly successful 4-year residency program, fellows in our highly competitive Pediatric EM Fellowship program, as well as medical students and other rotating residents.
