The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is seeking board-certified or board-eligible emergency medicine physicians to join our nationally recognized academic faculty.
Our faculty positions offer the opportunity to practice in a high-acuity, physician-led clinical environment while building a meaningful academic career with clear paths for growth and advancement. We welcome candidates across all subspecialties, with a particular interest in applicants with experience or advanced training in undergraduate and/or graduate medical education, or advanced emergency ultrasound.
Clinical Environment
At UW, emergency physicians work at the center of a large, integrated health system, caring for medically complex patients while shaping the future of the specialty. Faculty deliver exceptional emergency care for more than 110,000 patients each year across diverse practice settings, serving as a trusted resource for communities throughout the Upper Midwest.
Our flagship emergency department (ED) at University Hospital cares for more than 70,000 adult and pediatric patients annually. A 505-bed hospital on UW–Madison’s west campus, University Hospital is a Level I trauma and burn center and one of two academic medical centers in Wisconsin. It has been ranked the state’s No. 1 hospital by U.S. News & World Report for 14 consecutive years and serves as a leading regional referral center.
Additional clinical sites include a high-volume community ED at East Madison Hospital — a 20-bed Level IV Trauma Center and Acute Stroke Ready Hospital that sees approximately 44,000 adult and pediatric patients annually; the five-star William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital; and the pediatric ED at American Family Children’s Hospital, which cares for nearly 18,000 patients each year. Our University Hospital and East Madison Hospital EDs are undergoing major expansions that will open in 2027.
Our robust divisions advance patient care as recognized leaders across the UW Health system in areas such as point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), critical care, informatics, and prehospital medicine. Our POCUS program is well established, with robust quality assurance processes and strong engagement in global and prehospital settings. The program hosts highly regarded regional POCUS workshops each year and is a respected leader in ultrasound collaboration across the institution.

Our three-year accredited residency program, established in 2007, currently has 13 residents per class and will expand to 15 in the next recruitment cycle. We also offer a growing portfolio of competitive fellowship programs accredited by ACGME, SAEM, and EUFAC.
Faculty work closely with medical students, residents, and fellows in a collaborative, supportive environment. Effort is aligned with departmental needs, academic priorities, and individual expertise and career goals. Scholarly activity is also expected and supported by our nationally competitive research enterprise that translates rigorous science into improved education and patient care. This work is enabled by robust infrastructure — including embedded ED research coordinators, interdisciplinary collaboration across UW–Madison, and institutional support for grant development and dissemination — and strengthened by the university’s more than $1.93 billion annual investment in research and innovation.

Founded in 2014, the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine has rapidly grown into a nationally recognized academic department dedicated to advancing emergency medicine through rigorous research, comprehensive education and training, and compassionate patient care.

Candidates must have completed an ACGME-accredited emergency medicine residency and be board-certified or board-eligible through the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
