DescriptionJob Summary
The Lead Clinical Pharmacist Specialist ED/ICU/Residency Program for Critical Care & Emergency Medicine/Pharmacy Residency Program plays pivotal clinical and educational roles. This role is tasked with facilitating clinical pharmacy services within the scope of critical care (ICU) and emergency medicine (ED). Provides oversight and contributions to new and existing clinical pharmacy initiatives in the ICU and ED while ensuring alignment with regulatory standards, medication safety, and institutional guidelines. The dual role also adheres to the American Society of Health System Pharmacist (ASHP) Accreditation Standards and serves as the driving force behind both the hospital's pharmacy residency programs (i.e. PGY-1 and PGY-2). Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, guiding the design and implementation of safe, standardized medication systems, and collaborating with the healthcare team to achieve optimal outcomes. Provides leadership, mentorship, and oversight to pharmacy residents. Responsible for overseeing curriculum development, evaluating residents, coordinating clinical rotations, and managing administrative duties. Overall, this dual role combines clinical expertise, leadership, and educational responsibilities to enhance clinical pharmacy services in the ICU and ED as well as foster the growth of future pharmacy professionals.
Job Specific Duties
- Monitors the external environment for best practices and evaluates them for implementation in the organization.
- Provides direction for prioritization of the organization's quality improvement projects in critical care and emergency medicine areas.
- Provides advanced clinical pharmacy services in ICU and/or ED.
- Serves as subject matter expert for critical care and emergency medicine pharmacotherapy.
- Leads development and maintenance of ICU/ED-specific clinical protocols, order sets, and guidelines (e.g., sedation, sepsis, resuscitation).
- Provides leadership and oversight for pharmacy involvement in emergency response (code blue, trauma, rapid response), including standardization of medication practices and code cart optimization.
- Participates in resuscitation program initiatives and ensures alignment with institutional and evidence-based standards.
- Provides ongoing education for pharmacy staff and other health care professionals to promote safe, evidence-based medication practices in the ICU and ED.
- Facilitates availability of educational programs and materials to improve medication safety and understanding of critical care and emergency medicine pharmacotherapy.
- Participates in departmental, organizational, & regional committees related to emergency medications, drug shortages, adverse events, medication errors, policy review, safe medication use, etc.
- Analyzes current medication-use practices that may contribute to medication errors using quality improvement methodologies. Facilitates process & system changes to reduce likelihood of error.
- Develops strategies and provides solutions to improve patient safety such as the project management of corrective and preventative action plans.
- Attends P&T committee, Medication Steering committee, and other committees as applicable to ICU/ED (e.g. Resuscitation Committee, ICU Committee, etc).
- Partners with Medication Safety Committee to conduct ongoing analyses for improvement to identify priorities for medication safety and solutions for patient safety. Proposes actions as needed.
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary team to ensure methodical/systemic approach is utilized in addressing deficiencies with patient safety and clinical pharmacy services. Leverages resources & communicates findings to leadership.
- Develops structured approach for employee orientation & training for pharmacy residents & preceptors involved in the pharmacy residency programs.
- Organizes and leads residency advisory committee that provides guidance for residency program conduct and related issues.
- Provides oversight of the progression of pharmacy residents within the program and maintains documentation of completed requirements.
- Ensures continuous residency program improvement in conjunction with the residency advisory committee.
- Serves as preceptor for the residents and students relevant to the practice setting.
- Creates, implements, and maintains preceptor development plan for the residency program. Responsible for evaluation, skill assessment, and development of preceptors in the program.
- Responsible for the interviewing and selection of residency candidates.
- Implements use of criteria for appointment and reappointment of residency program preceptors.
- Ensures compliance with ASHP accreditation standards, including maintenance of required documentation, program evaluations, and continuous readiness for accreditation surveys.
- Oversees residency program assessment processes (e.g., PharmAcademic documentation, competency evaluations, summative assessments).
Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.)
- Current Florida Pharmacist license - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- American Heart Association BLS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- American Heart Association PALS - maintain active and in good standing throughout employment
- 4-7 years of hospital clinical pharmacy experience
- 2-4 years of clinical pediatric program development experience in a pediatric hospital
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- ASHP accredited PGY-1 Hospital Residency highly preferred.
- Pediatric Pharmacotherapy Board Certification (BCPPS) highly preferred.
- Specialized training in quality and patient / medication safety curricula preferred.
- Previous project management experience preferred.
- Expert influencing skills preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with all levels of organization personnel and all patient groups.
- Extensive knowledge of diverse teaching strategies for individuals and groups.
- Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management across the system.
- Analytical skills necessary to identify customer needs in order to develop strategic education plan.
- Experience using computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, and pharmacy information systems.
- Ability to problem solve and think analytically; ability to troubleshoot in a timely manner including weekends and holidays.
- Demonstrated experience with PC applications to include Microsoft Word, Excel, Access.
